State Highway 29 reopened this evening after being closed nearly all day due to a homicide investigation in a rural area in Napa County, according to the Napa County Sheriff's office.

The highway reopened at around 5:15 p.m., sheriff's officials said.

A woman in her mid- to late 50s was found injured in the southbound lane of Highway 29 near Old Lawley Toll Road around 4:45 a.m., deputies said.

Sheriff's deputies found the woman suffering from major injuries and airlifted her to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, but she died while en route, according to sheriff's officials.

The rural area where the woman was found has few pedestrians and investigators have not found a vehicle associated with the incident. They are investigating the incident as a possible homicide, sheriff's officials said.

CHP issued a Sig-alert at 6:28 a.m. closing Highway 29 in both directions between Tubbs Lane and Robert Louis Stevenson State Park.

Emergency responders from the Calistoga Fire Department, Napa County fire and Cal Fire also responded to the incident.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Napa County sheriff's Detective Chris Pacheco at (707) 253-4591.
